It consists of a bar that is held in place in the wearer's mouth by straps or other devices. It is generally safer due to the constant airflow.īit A man, blindfolded with a bit gagĪ bit gag is styled like the bit used in a bridle for a horse, and much of its sexual appeal stems from fetishistic symbolism in pony play. The wearer can still be heard, but it renders their speech completely unintelligible, distorts their facial features, and causes drooling if the wearer attempts to talk.Ī wiffle gag is a simple ball gag that replaces the standard solid rubber ball with a light plastic ball similar to the one used for the game of floorball. If the ball is very large, it may be difficult to insert behind the teeth or to remove it. They are used as a sign of control by the dominant. The ball is strapped into the mouth behind the teeth, with the straps going around the head to secure it in place. The most common diameter is 1.75 inches (44 mm), but other sizes can be found. Ball Ī ball gag is usually a rubber or silicone sphere with a strap passing through its diameter. Types of gag A man gagged with a large red ball gag. It is also common to use an additional non-verbal safety mechanism, such as a solid object held in the hand that can be released by the gagged person to signal distress. Thus, a pattern of noises, such as three grunts in rapid succession, is sometimes used as a safeword by BDSM players. Most gags that prevent the subject from making intelligible speech still permit loud, inarticulate noises to call for help. ![]() In practice, no gag is effective enough to silence someone completely without inhibiting breathing. A gagged subject should never be left alone. ![]() Vomiting and choking also pose a risk, since they further block the airway. Using a gag on somebody who is ill or has a common allergy (including sensitivities to cologne or perfume) is also quite dangerous, as most gags make it difficult or impossible to breathe through the mouth. Gagging anybody is very risky, as it involves a substantial risk of asphyxia if the subject's nose is blocked while wearing a gag. Some people are sexually aroused by such imagery, even if there is no nudity or sexual act present, or even if the victim is only gagged but not restrained in any way. One specific gag paraphilia relates to video depictions in which the captor gags the damsel in distress to stop her screaming for help. When a person is sexually aroused by gags, it may be considered a paraphilia. Gags may be classified as over-the-mouth type, mouth stuffing type or mouth opening type. Some gags are designed to fill the mouth, while others are designed to provide access to the mouth by forcing the mouth open. The type of gag used depends on the tastes of the parties and the type of roleplay scene, what is available at the time, and safety considerations. Some fetishists are sexually aroused by the sound gagged people make when they try to speak, or by seeing a person drool uncontrollably. ![]() To some, wearing a gag without restraints is still an act of humiliation, as is an open mouth gag. When combined with other physical restraints, the wearing of a gag can increase the wearer's sense of helplessness and anxiety level within a BDSM scene by rendering them unable to speak during sexual activity, which some people enjoy.įor some people, gags have connotations of punishment and control, and thus can be used as a form of humiliation. Some people derive erotic pleasure from a gag, either in a submissive or dominant role. People may wear gags for a variety of reasons. The person who wears the gag is regarded as the submissive partner, while the other is regarded as the dominant one. Gags are usually associated with roleplays involving bondage, but that is not necessarily the case. Spiritually focused genograms have been suggested as an effective means for tapping the spiritual resources of families as well as cultural factors in the context of family dynamics (Dunn & Dawes, 1999 Hodge, 2001). For example, genograms often provide a useful means of exploring religious and spiritual issues and their impact on clients' lives. Genograms provide an exceptional mechanism to encourage insight and awareness by focusing on strengths, beliefs, and traditions in families. Genograms present a mechanism of identifying strengths and resources of individuals and families within a life cycle framework. While understanding dysfunctional patterns is essential to treatment, identifying strengths is also the foundation that directs intervention. Genograms have been used to help practitioners understand the family context, to trace behavior and problems of family members, and to identify patterns and issues within families. As a visual assessment tool, the genogram can be used to trace family influences in various contexts as well as in the broader system (McGoldrick & Gerson, 1985). ![]() Review of LiteratureĪ genogram is a graphic representation of family members and their relationships over at least three generations. These family strengths have been applied to a Family Integrated Genogram (FIG) as an effective approach for understanding African American families. ![]() They are identified as some of the major strengths of African American families (Billingsley, 1992, 1999 Hill, 1997 Hines & Boyd-Franklin, 1996 Pipes, 1997). This article describes and promotes the use of the family genogram with African American families as a means of adapting identified family strengths and family resources of spirituality, religion, and extended family networks. Such a perspective also involves the ability of practitioners to recognize and employ resources and strengths of African American families. Effective practice with African American families requires understanding family strengths, resources, and dimensions of African American past and present family life. With families from diverse backgrounds, practitioners must be culturally competent to avoid culturally oppressive practices with clients (Chin, De La Cancela, & Jenkins, 1993 Montague, 1996 Sue & Sue, 1990). The genogram can be especially useful when working with diverse cultural groups-especially African American families-to promote cultural knowledge (Bean, Perry, & Bedell, 2002 Thomas, 1998). It represents a large quantity of complex family information (Stanion & Papadopoulos, 1997) and can effectively illustrate family data, family history, family systems, and intergenerational transmission (Hardy & Laszloffy, 1995 Hartman & Laird, 1983 Kilpatrick & Holland, 2003 McGoldrick, Gerson, & Shellenberger, 1999). Diagrammatically, the genogram is an intergenerational map of three or more generations of a family and a primary assessment tool that focuses on intergenerational patterns and relationships among family members (Goldenberg & Goldenberg, 2000 Hartman, 1995 McGoldrick, Gerson, & Shellenberger, 1999). Then Abdul-Mateen’s character and Neo speak in a dojo, a recreation of another famous scene from the original film in which Reeves intoned, “I know kung fu” in the most Keanu Reeves way possible. Henwick’s character then tells Neo that if he wants the truth, he’s going to have to follow her, and they walk through (you guessed it) a mirror or looking-glass. Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, wearing Morpheus’ signature sunglasses, holds up a red pill and blue pill to Neo and says, “Time to fly.” Obviously, this scene mimics Neo’s fateful choice in the first film? Is Abdul-Mateen playing Morpheus? Is this whole movie a reboot or a sequel or a prequel or none of those things? (More on those questions later.) Keanu Reeves and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II in Matrix Resurrections Warner Bros.Īnd here’s where things get interesting. A character named Dujour also had a rabbit tattoo in the original movie. Perhaps that’s his future self or true self or someone entirely different? A little bit later in the trailer we see a woman played by Jessica Henwick sporting a rabbit tattoo on her shoulder. We also get a reference to Alice in Wonderland’s sequel, Through the Looking-Glass, in the next shot as Neo looks in a mirror and sees what looks to be an older version of himself. In the Resurrection trailer, the song “White Rabbit” by Jefferson Airplane chronicles Alice’s choice between two pills early in her journey-one that would make her big and another that would make her small-a nod to Neo’s own choice between two pills. White rabbits kept popping up in the movie. In that movie, Morpheus offers to take Neo “down the rabbit hole,” just as Alice started her adventure into a topsy turvy world. We also get a quick shot of the book Alice in Wonderland, a movie heavily referenced in the first film. And while at the end of the original Matrix trilogy, the humans and machines had come to a tentative peace in their war against one another, the machines may have subtly regained more control than humans have even realized. Wachowski is no doubt nodding to the fact that we are now, more than ever, dependent on machines and technology, far more so than when The Matrix premiered in 1999. We get a shot of a bunch of people in an elevator staring at their phones while Neo stares upwards, obviously disturbed. Keanu Reeves in Matrix Resurrections Warner Bros. They may be just a symbol of Neo trying to escape his depressing reality (and perhaps a commentary on our reliance on prescription medications) or these may literally be the pills that keep him from remembering what happened when he left the Matrix, whether he knows that’s what they’re doing or not. The red pill would take him further down the “rabbit hole,” and reveal the truth of his existence. The blue pill would return him to his normal life in the Matrix and help him forget he was living in a simulation. Even the most casual Matrix fan will recall that in the first movie Morpheus (played by Laurence Fishburne) offers Neo a blue pill and a red pill. From this trailer alone, it seems Wachowski, who is co-writing and directing Resurrections, is interested in exploring themes like how technology has gained an even greater hold over us since the original trilogy debuted.Īnd here come the pills. ![]() ![]() They’re almost certainly making a larger philosophical point. But knowing filmmaker Lana Wachowski, co-creator of the original Matrix trilogy along with Lilly Wachowski, the parallels between the two movies don’t just exist for the sake of fan service. To that end, it looks like we will get new riffs on the iconic red pill/blue pill scene and the dojo scene, among other nods to the original film.įans are already excited by the prospect of returning to many of the most famous moments from the original film. He will need to journey back down the rabbit hole again. If this is the same Neo from the original trilogy, he seems to have forgotten that he is the chosen one. More curious still, Neo and Trinity both seem to have aged, while other characters in the film look to be younger versions of the characters we met in the original trilogy. Considering that both of these characters died in the third film, why they are still alive or whether these are even the same characters we met back in 1999 is up for debate. ![]() In the trailer, we find out that Keanu Reeves‘ Neo and Carrie-Anne Moss’ Trinity are back inside the Matrix. What we do know is that Resurrections parallels the original Matrix film in many ways. All the better that the plot remain a mystery before the film’s premiere in December.
